Make a certified latter saying that you give the vehicle to your son as a gift. Return plates and cancel registration with RI DMV. Your son may need the title just in case is need it. Good luck.

Given that he will register it outside of Rhode Island all you need do is cancel the registration. You can do that online here https://www.ri.gov/DMV/cancel_registration Please destroy the plates. You do not need to return them to the DMV. You may want to hold onto your registration form in the event the State of New Mexico requires it as part of its registration process.

Go on website ridmv.org ,and you should be able to find your way with this issue! Make sure you turn in plates along WITH registration unless you're gifting to SON as well!
