Your family member needs to give you a gift letter stating both your names and addresses, the relationship between you, and the vehicle’s information (year, make, model, and VIN). If you are also keeping the vehicle’s current plates, he/she must give permission for you to do so in the letter. If the vehicle is 2001 or newer, you must have the title to the vehicle, signed over to you by your family member in the ‘transfer of owner’ section on the back of the title. Otherwise, you will need the previous registration. If the title is from out of state, you will also need a VIN check at your local police department. Your current RI license and insurance information will be needed at the time of registration. Gifts from immediate family members are considered sales tax exempt. Immediate family members are limited to mother, father, sister, brother, son, or daughter, including step family relationships. A gift letter from anyone else must be notarized.

YOU USE A PLATE GIFT LETTER. IT SHOULD READ SOMETHING ALONG THE LINES OF "I, 'MOM,' GIFT TO MY SON/DAUGHTER, 'YOU,' THE FOLLOWING PLATE, 'XXXXX.'"
