You must go to a DMV office to renew your license. You now have a choice of whether to choose a standard driver's license or a license that complies with federal REAL ID regulations. On Oct. 1, 2020, the federal government will require you to have a REAL ID-compliant license or a passport in hand to board a domestic air flight. For details, visit www.dmv.ri.gov/realid There you will find an answer guide on REAL ID.

bring your expired license if you just want to get a regular license however there's a move that has to be done by October 1st 2020 if you ever want to get on an airplane or walk into a federal building You should bring an original birth certificate and Social Security card and two proofs of address and you will qualify for the new real ID driver's license If you already have a passport then you need not do this but you will have to bring your passport if you want to get on a domestic flight anytime after October 1st 2020
