Where do you park

There is a parking lot on Jones Street. 1 block West of the mansion across from the State library. Free on most weekends but pay from 7am-600pm on weekdays.

Best option after 5 PM is across from the NC State Archives Building

On the grass

All around the governor's mansion there is street parking, just look out for the signs towards the end of the block that state where you can't park past. Beyond that you can look at the parking lot beside the museums, that isn't that far of a walk and is generally free on the weekends and after 5 PM.
