No you cant drive expired plates of any kind on a South Carolina road or highyway. And you dont have to wait on a sticker if registration is valid, before you get pulled over you have generally been scaned already and the police or scdot, or commited a infraction to be pulled over and ran personally. So likely they know, im not sure if improperly displayed tags in this case will get you a ticket it depends on how the officer reads your due diligence to abide by law.

Technically no, the real question relys on whether or not you will get caught or not. That being said the fine isn't worth the risk and either fixing your tag before the new year or just not driving until it's fixed is the way to go. In the end getting caught with an illegal tag will cost a whole lot more than just renewing it. However, if you have paid to renew it online and are waiting for the new sticker, as long as you have proof that you're waiting on the sticker then it shouldn't be an issue
