Make sure you check if the lots are open during the time of year you go hiking. We went November 6 a few years ago, but we didn't arrive until around 7pm. By that time all the entrances were closed. We drove around until we found a spot on the road to park. From there it was at least a 2 hour hike to the shelter. It is a beautiful view though, well worth the trouble!
About 2 miles, you can park off road and take the Suffrin-BearMountain trail (yellow) South to the long path (teal green) right to big hill. Edit: I was just there this past weekend for an overnight
