I have free movie tix to go and see Star Wars this weekend. I hope to attend the showing with some family members who are buying their own tix. If they buy advance tickets with assigned seats will I be able to sit with them in the same theater?

It you get the seats near them. Otherwise you have to get what's open. Meaning if the seats that are open isnt in the same theater you would have to get a different showing. To prevent this go and have your tickets switched over to reserved seating by either calling ahead or by going in person and all.
