I have also been coming to Don Pepe for more than 20 years and I love it just as much today as the first time that I went there. I've been to La Carreta more than once and food is just not prepared as well as Don Pepe's is. Would be curious to know what the response was from the manager that was so displeasing to you... I have never had anything other than outstanding service and outstanding food at Don Pepe which is very reasonably priced. Price in fact is less expensive than La Carreta.
I prefer La Cerrata as well. Cheaper and nicer and always seems to be busier
