I have a set of original rims, alloy, chromed, but the aluminum is pitting around the rim, I have heard this is a common malady, but wondering if there is a cure that is cheaper than getting new rims.

If chrome is de-laminating from base metal- there are 2 choices: strip them down and get them replated, or, have base alloy polished- RGX did an awesome job on mine (they were curb rashed,badly...) stripping/painting is an option as well- re-chroming is REALLY expensive....
