There is a book called Narragansett Bay and fortifications it is an excellent book I have read and tells in detail the name of all the forts what size gun emplacements were there the Sea Coast Battery numbers and all the statistics very interesting book
It began with American colonists fortifying the site to prevent British attacks on Newport at the beginning of the Revolution. It was slowly built up and modernized through 1940, when barracks and new artillery were installed to defend the coast and to train troops in artillery spotting, signaling, and observation.
The artillery was located there but they directed the guns from spotting bunkers at the Conanicut Battery along Beaverton Rd. They also had submarine nets across the entrance to Narragansett Bay from Castle Hill in Newport to Ft. Wetherill.
Ww2 they had cannons there and guards to keep watch on the sea, and it held prisoners. as soon as the war was over it shut down, fort james in Newport is similar but remained open after the war
