If you are going to carry a weapon on your person in a concealed fashion for protection in public you must have a cocealed carry license. A hunter safety course is NOT a substitute. The hunter safety course is only a prerequisite for getting a hunting license.
If you have previously taken a hunter safety class in Florida or elsewhere, or any other firearm safety class you may be able to skip this step if you have proof of completion of the course.
To all pontificating about FS 790.023, I would recommend you read it, know it & understand it before you get you Concealed Weapons License. So start at 790.01 and read it through then do it again, until you understand it and have a working knowledge of the statute. Failure to do so may be judged very harshly in a court of law. Before you carry the same is true for FS 776 as well the repercussions of not performing your due diligence can be staggering. Make sure you go to recurrent training as well, participation in organized shooting events are a great way to stay current.
An FWC Hunter safety course when completed supersedes the concealed weapons course and can be used to get your CWP. I know for sure because it was told by the FWC Officer teaching the class I was taking, so I used it for myself and I now have a CWP.
My son used his hunter safety course to get his concealed carry license. They accepted it as his safety class. This was about five years ago and they may not accept it now. I don’t know for sure.
Hunters safety course is not a qualification for conceal carry
You still need class.
Shawn is absolutly correct. Being a veteran of 11 years and proof of I was issued my CW very quickly many years ago. Some day maybe open to carry might come available in this life time ?
