It depends. Is it a gold bullion coin or silver? I have several 5 dollar ones and they are .9999 fine gold. If its gold then we are not talking about face value. We are talking about weight.

Probably face value. Not old enough to have any antiquity value, and I may be mistaken, but pretty sure it isn't a "silver" dollar so it wouldn't have value from silver weight. I could be wrong however, so I suggest taking it to the store and let the nice guys at Americana appraise it.
