He has to sign a release
If he's over 18, you can't get information unless it's from him.
When you talk to your son, tell him that he needs to sign a release so that you can talk to his counselor. If he refuses, and you are putting money on his phone or in his canteen....refuse any money until he signs it....that usually works. No release...no money! Good luck!
This facility is ran by the department of correction they will not release information and you cannot go on doc property he's not a state inmate he can call you but he needs you to set up an account or he can through the doc canteen kiosk

You can call and ask to speak to a councellor, if he has permission, he eill let you know how your son is doing. I've called to check on mine. He also can call home. There is a website to add money so they can call collect.
