Why is the 800 number so difficult to navigate? I needed to speak with a live person and was unable to do so. Instead I had to go directly to a local HD store to inquire about my online order. This should not be necessary in this day and age.

Call the local number and ask to speak to somebody at the pro desk. Tell him you don't want to be transferred.
