Yes they are in season. The availability has to do with the vendor. One may have them and another not. Your best bet to find them is to make a trip to the state farmers market or perhaps a farm or local produce stand/farmers market that offers yellow meated watermelons. There are many around. My experience at the Daytona Flea & Farmers Market has been they often offer samples of the good stuff and what you get home with is a different quality and flavor. Mid range sizes seem to have the best flavor and are less gritty.
Watermelon season runs throughout the summer -- from May to September -- but the exact range depends on where you live, Keep an eye out at your local farmers market. You can't miss these big guys, and there will be plenty at peakseason.
