I was told by a reliable source that It is completely legal to take it off but then you have to treat it like you would a live real gun.
If you purchased an airsoft gun with an orange tip and removed it, technically it will be considered illegal. However, it is not regularly regulated and many airsoft guns are sold without an orange colored tip. Please keep in mind that without the orange tip in public or in the presents of an officer will trigger a real firearm response and may have consequences that end in death. Of course if the airsoft gun with no orange tip was used in a crime of any means may result in charges of the same caliber as a real firearm. It would be best to keep the orange tip for your safety.
