(Yes, I know this is a 2 y/o question) FYI: I was head doorman/security at one of the busiest clubs in the Castro for almost 6 years, so I have real knowledge. Here's the scoop: Technically foreign DLs and ID cards are not valid identification in the US, but some places will take them depending on how they are familiar with it. For example, they may see enough UK DLs to recognize what they should look like, but a DL from say, Portugal would be unfamiliar and not easy to recognize it's authentic. Also, if you're obviously old enough (you look 45) there is more leeway than if you are early 20's or look 17. Things that don't work, unless the doorperson doesn't know their job are unofficial things like Age Cards (a bizarre UK thing) and International Driver's Licenses (good for nothing really). But in reality your passport/visa is your official ID when in the US. Again, sometimes people/places are lax on these things so you may get lucky.
