Would they accept a written statement mailed in that I will start to pay rent? I don't have a way to get to this office, and I want to possibly avoid a phone call; but will do it if a written statement isn't sufficient.

Sometimes it's a good idea to have someone else sign on the page you're sending in as a witness to what you're writing about along with your signature. Also, indicate the rent amount and the date it will be paid. Hope this helps.
