How do I go about checking my status on a job application I submitted a while ago? I tried calling but no one answered the phone.

Try walking in and speak to the manager, you have to be persistent show them that you really want to work there. Times are hard good luck!

I am not sure about their hiring process. I would recommend going up there, if they arent answering the phone. I would also make mention of the fact.
