DB Urban 38 Longboard complete looks similar to the board I started out on. I recommend it for cruising and carving, because it is fun to carve at any speed and a fun way to learn the basics of skateboarding. The essential skills are kicking (pushing yourself forward), turning, and foot braking. I still ride my Never Summer Heist because it is fun to cruise and carve down the street. Any board will work for a beginner except a downhill board or downhill trucks. Downhill trucks won't turn as much and are specifically made for more dangerous speeds (30+ mph) that require experience. I hope that helps.
