How far in advance do you usually need to get tickets?

I'd recommend at least 2 hours before doors, as otherwise you may be stuck in line before even getting to the ticket booth. But all depends on the show to get tickets. Better to buy online in advance

I did see someone in the booth, but I don't know about most shows.
