Very, and especially on top of the hill. Tons of open grass to play with enough benches to sit on.
Many dog owners (and their dogs) socialize up on the top western space towards the Jackson and Scott corner.
Yes
Yes absolutely
As far as i can remember dog are allowed on a leash within the park but no dogs are allowed within the play areas.
Definitely
Truth be told despite any signage to the contrary - Alta Park is a Doge Dominated park. Eighty percent of doge owners totally ignore the rules and let their canines have the run of the entire park. Which is why there are doggie leavings here and there, regardless of whether doges are "permitted" in any specific area, leashed or not. Any Recreation & Parks personnel in the vicinity will not intervene as they are occupied with other responsibilities. It is the Park Rangers who are tasked with enforcement of policy. But Alta Park very rarely gets the attention from the Rangers, since it is way too chilly there at night for the homeless to camp there. Doges polluting the grounds are the least of their concerns. Other than small children, it is basically a doge park. But keep an eye out for aggressive alpha doges, that occasionally assert their position among the other pooches. The little ones are the most aggressive, than the big ones. Since a lot of users "un" leash on entry.
Most parks in SF are dog friendly, there may not be a specific dog area but your dog can be off leash and noone will gripe. There is a kids playground at the top so just avoid that area if your dog is prone to chasing.
