It also matters what breed the dog is. I adopted my dog from there the day his stray hold was lifted. had I not done that he would have been euthanized. Because he was flagged unsafe to handle and unsafe to vaccinate... Why? ,Because he was biting the catch pole when he was picked up... Absolutely ridiculous! He's a sweetheart and huge lover when I picked him up from being neutered the staff was saying how sweet he was . And to think he would've been euthanized due to plain and simple ignorance. So many dogs get killed for even less. It's a shame and it's sickening.
Wow! Ok no this is false answers! Dogs stay on 4 day stray hold, this gives owners times to reclaim, then the dog gets evaluated for temperament towards people and dogs. If they pass they are marked green which gives 35 days to get adopted or rescued. If they don't pass they are yellow or red depending on behavior, this gives less then 35 days. The shelter DOES NOT euthanize based on breed! Medical is the other reason for euthanasia as they can be suffering and it's not humane to keep them alive to continue to suffer. Hope that answers your question better then the non sense and hearsay
An animal's temperament CAN NOT truly be evaluated, when that animal is terrified. This would be like evaluating a human who's in "fight or flight" mode. Adding to their fear is the yelping, panicked barking, and smell of other animals who've been euthanized, down the hall. Evaluations, done on kill shelter premises aren't good guidelines.
The shelter is working on being a no kill shelter, if you look on the website you will see this goal. Hope it helps
Dont listen to the. 35 day thing please! Listen to people that have experienced what this pound does. My dog was at the pound 5 days. The first day we valled and told them it would be a few fsys to get the 400.00 needed to get him out. My husband went down and talked with them. We called every day oir dog was thete. The 5th morning I called to let them know my husband was on his way to pick our dog up. A gentleman said he was just put down that morning. We were devastated. The pound also down right lied to us at day number 1 saying the did not kill animals. Only relocated them. This place is the most inhumane discusting place ever.
Health and behavioral you can't adopt out an aggressive dog that will bite or harm someone.
First, they have to be healthy. They also have to be at least somewhat social. If either is not possible, the chances for adoption go way down.
We don't want any dogs euthanized, but the numbers are fairly low. There is a rescue group that devotes itself to saving these dogs. Unclaimed, unchipped dogs are available for adoption in 3 days, per CA law. It is generally over a month before they are on the euthanasia list. Most of these get rescued. Get you dogs neutered and microchipped so they are less likely to wander, live longer and get returned if they do get away.
