I did Catalina Island on a day trip. We left from Newport Beach and return the same day I believe I purchase my ticket through Groupon
Try a tour that goes Inland and up to the airport on a high-clearance vehicle. It is a nice ride you get a lot of information about the island and beautiful Vistas. We did this while on a cruise as a Shore Excursion. I do not know if we booked it through the ship or on our own. Also, if you have time, take the submarine tour that is close to where you come to shore from the ship. Also if you have a need for a sweet go to Lloyd's candy shop it has excellent treats. Enjoy your cruise.
