The sand is groomed within the ropes, but there's nothing stopping you from swimming outside of them as long as you don't mind the muck. Of course there's a bunch of speed boats buzzing around the lake, so don't go too far out, unless you don't mind getting run over by a boat.
There are small private Sandy spots along the railroad tracks if u don't mind a nice nature walk..
I can't remember if there's a life guard or not, they would tell you!
