I went as a kid and just sent my son for the first time last summer. It is 98% a normal camp experience. They don't "push" religion to any degree but they do sing some camp songs that mention God and that kind of thing. The counselors are in no way preachy and they don't have bible study or anything as serious as that.
Thanks for your question! Wanakee is owned by the New England Conference of the United Methodist Church, and open to any and all - we proudly serve campers from diverse backgrounds. Much of what we do because we are Methodist is, we believe, valued across backgrounds - supportive community, accepting everyone for who they are, practicing forgiveness/empathy, contemplative practice etc. We have many concretely "church" elements - we sing grace / songs at meals, many of which have Christian content. After breakfast we share in Morning Watch, where we tell a Bible story, adapted for kids, with a goal for the day like "be a good friend". We also have an all-camp church service on Thur. evenings, and guide campers in conversations of faith and morality when they gather around the campfire. Whether a family goes to church every week or has never been, we want them to feel welcomed and challenged, to discover ways they might grow in faith, and to encounter a unique community of acceptance.
