There is a public area that has red lights for ease of finding a location and it has a large berm to keep parking lot lights out
The public observation area is great, with benches, free parking, red cellophane for your cellphones, and frequent programming
The park is setup for the stars. Just plan for being without places to eat and say its in the middle of nowhere. Cherry springs store is all you have.
Anywhere on the observation field, if there is anyone there with astro equipment, or even if there isn't anyone there... be sure to observe proper light courtesy after dark. If you just want to look at anything, go have fun. If there is something specific you want to see, like a meteor shower, do some research to find out where it will be when you want to observe. Then go on the field during the day with a compass or smart phone app and choose a spot that gives you the best sky and horizon for that area of the sky. Remember, if you are not there with astro equipment you will not be permitted to have your vehicle on the observation field after dark. You will have to park across the street from the observation field. So be sure to know where you have to walk from the main gate. Cell phone signal is weak there, do not depend on using your smart phone for anything but it's apps!
