I was there in December and YES the waves are pretty intimidating plus the water was super cold..Not sure about this time if the year. I hope this helps.

It depends. There are people who swim there at times.
Was there in may and it wasn't to bad.
It depends on the day. The surf was fine when we were there, it was foggy and too cold to go all the way in!
I was there April and yes, the breaks were too large for good swimming. More mild in summer.
