Watch the tide and current, you are so close to the main channel with huge currents.
Kirby Cove is in the channel to between the San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. People who actually "swam" here hit an incredibly "safe and calm" day. You really need to know what you're doing should you enter the water on the beach here -- the beach across the way on the SF side loses 5+ people every year because they turn there back on the ocean for the picture of the Golden Gate Bridge in the background -- and a wave comes up out of the deep channel and engulfs them in water -- only to be extremely quickly swept out to sea in the rip currents. If you don't swim in the ocean regularly -- this is NOT THE PLACE TO START. I'm a hard core surfer and I've had to rescue 2 people in my life from currents in the Bay Area. This is the Pacific ocean -- respect it -- and don't win the Darwin Awards for not knowing your surroundings.
I swam there. It was ok. The current is not too strong
