Maybe save up to buy a nice house in Mexico since you'll live in Merida which is a kind of tourist place, houses should be around 75k US dollars for your dream house in Mexico. And to become a resident check in with the Mexican Consulate in Merida but to be honest being a US Citizen you won't need to become a Mexican resident unless you're planning to work in Mexico, otherwise you should be good living in Mexico with no problems as well with being absent from the US. Also I almost forgot there was a law where they can only sell land to Mexican Citizens, but no sure.
