If you charged the item on a credit or debit card the store can trace the item back and can credit your account or a regular Nordstroms store will most likely be able to look up the product number and give you credit on a gift card.
I have a Nordstrom card so it automatically stores all transactions. I would think without one you probably need a receipt.
