Pulling on the hand lever pushes a longitudinal bar, which runs along the chassis under the cab, toward the back wheels. This bar pushes another transverse bar back. The transverse bar has leather covered blocks which push against the rear wheels to brake them. It is pretty hard to see unless you can get up close!
