If you rent one of their guns, you need to take a buddy to rent it with you and you will have to buy their ammo as well. If you bring your own (make sure is in a case) you can go by yourself and bring your own ammo (brass only).
If you go by yourself then yes you have to own a firearm to rent but if you go with a friend then you can rent without owning a firearm
