There are interpretive signs that tell the history. But, lake chatcolet is named after Princess Chatcolet who committed suicide from what is known as Indian cliffs if I remember the stories right. She fell in love with a French trapper (if I remember right) and committed suicide from Indian cliffs, I can not recall the whole reason why she did this.
As far as I know it is named that because Indians lived in that area.on the bike path ,not far from the trailhead is a sign telling about the Indians racing horses there. There is also other signs In the park explaing how the Indians fished, hunted, and dug water potatoes in the marshes.i know people who have found arrowheads very close to the cliffs !
