Do people actually love having to fly to Seattle just to get somewhere or do people want more non - stop service to many more cities in the USA as Southwest Airlines is trying to grow PDX with more flights to more cities?

Can't stand Seattle. Fly JetBlue deals nonstop to Long Beach 🌴 or Hawaiian to the islands.

There are plenty of options out of pdx. Are you using miles or trying for the cheapest fares? Either of those may require Seattle, as a leg of a flight. You should be glad you don't fly out of Redmond...

Nothing wrong with Seattle, if you don't like flying in to there book your flight with someone else. Or to another city
