Hi John - We're not sure without more information, although it is baby bird season so perhaps they are caring for their young.
Here it is December 2018, and I just saw these posts. This is something I just messaged to Audubon, and maybe anyone reading this could help as well: Hi, I have noticed at least in the last couple weeks, if not longer, I have not seen any Steller's Jays up at my place. They were ubiquitous in the summer, but suddenly I became aware they weren't around. I live Northeast of Clatskanie, about 200 to 250 feet above the surface of the Columbia river, which is just to the north of where I live. I don't recall this happening before. This is the first year I have neglected to put out sunflower seeds. You would think that there would still be a few around, wouldn't you? Please help. Thanks, Carol Brandt
We had a pair of Scrub Jays nesting nearby for more than seven years and this year they did not return. We miss the "Jay-Jays!" The baby Jay the pair chased away last year has started coming in for food occasionally as the parent's are not here claiming territory. I witnessed a new Jay the other day.with the young Jay. A new pair?

How do I safely catch a crow with a broken wing to being it in? It’s not flying and very vulnerable.
