Credit cards are always needed for incidentals and accidents.
It's a common and well known practice to use a credit card for security and incidental purposes. Many will allow you to use another form of payment to close the account though.

They need a card without a small limit for thenreasons stated above. You probably could have given them your credit card to have on file, and paid for the room at the end with the gift card. Henshould have told you that if its true. I dont see why it wouldnt be. I understand not using it as a hold card for damages but you actually pay at the end of your stay. Can even be cash. Be sure to use AAA etc for a room rate reduction!
Every hotel needs a real credit card on file in case you break something or steal something
