Mostly reservations, and they sell out in advance. If there are empty cap spots but people reserve them well in advance.
Day use by the lake is awesome. The park fills up quick for camping though, so reservations are reccomended.
Check Texas Parks and Wildlife Website before you try this in April or May. Usually totally reserved.

I wouldn't suggest walking...HQ is far away from the campsites. They have a lot of sites, but get large groups. You should really make a reservation. However, day use has a lot to offer!
