Sunflower in the shell, black ones....and patience
I use a mix. The more you have in your hand, the easier it is for them to see it.
So I have a mix but I've found most birds prefer the larger narrow black sunflower seeds. The cardinals especially like the sunflower seeds and the best way to feed them is to leave them and watch from a few feet away. The chickadees and titmice both are more outgoing and less picky. There are also ospreys, which you shouldn't try to feed. There are wild turkeys which you can feed at your own risk. Occasionally there are blue jays but they have odd diets and won't be interested in a general bird seed mix.
To keep this practice sustainable, try not to leave any seed behind. Otherwise population of four legged rodents increases, leading to unwanted consequences.
They do love their sunflower seeds! But, also have luck with the with wild bird food variety as well!
Safflower seeds, they are white, the birds love those.
Small black shiny sunflower seeds. You can purchase in grocery stores out east. Best time to go is early morning and 2nd best time is at dusk. Chipmunk will eat out of your hand too. Turkey's can be aggressive, I throw the seeds and run. I had incident with a deer while sitting gazebo. At first I only saw one but then I realized quickly there was a group of them. One in the front of the group for about 20 minutes kept hissing and stomping his feet.
Don't worry much about the seed type... More important is time of day and season and number of people there.
Sunflower seeds are a big hit. Or a blend with them in it
