Yes I would call ahead and make reservations
It helps to call ahead to make sure they have space available. Not sure about the reservation part.
For tent camping you don't but if you want an RV space or cabin you should reserve a spot.
You can just show up, but you're not guaranteed a spot in the dorms or a spot with water and electricity to camp. Best to call ahead....
