this seems to be a hard campground to get a spot with it being first come first serve when is the best time to hopefully get a site?

If you can get in on a weekday you'll have the best chance. Especially before midweek.

In the summer it's hard. Coming in the middle of the week tends to help and we call for a spot the morning we leave but we only live 2 hrs away.
