I haven’t flown since 2000. I was told that I now print off my own (pre-purchased) tickets at the airport when I arrive???? This sounds weird.

This is accurate. You can print them out at the airport with a picture ID.

You can print your boarding pass from home to save the time at the airport. Go to your airline's website and look for a link for checkin, my trips, or something like that. It is easier and quicker than doing it at the airport.
