I was there last week and the water is perfectly safe for swimming if you heed all the normal rules. The water is actually currently too low to go down the small 'waterfalls' in a kayak that are in the Hoyts Crossing area.
I live in the area and would caution you that this river is very dangerous. This spring one of our local experts in whitewater kayaking was killed by drowning in this area. swimmers drown each year. Be careful.
High intensity river kyacking during the Spring snowmelt is world class and high difficulty for only experienced river kayakers.
