Please always tip service people at least something because minimum wage absolutely sucks. A lot of restaurants only pay minimum wage to the people who take your pickup order just like other employees, and they do actually provide you service by taking your order and retrieving it or anything else you ask for (plus seating, cleaning up, and delivery, which no tips go to the host). Not expecting 20% at all (minimum wage differs between servers and hosts, though both are far too low) but hosts need tips just like other waitstaff. Also, for those who tip only "if the food is good", kitchen staff don't rely on tips, and the hosts or bartenders or whoever handles pickups doesn't split the tip with them. The person bringing you your meal has nothing to do with that, and punishing them for how much you liked your food is rude.
What made you believe that they expected you to tip? The standard slip has a space for a tip but, it is definitely not expected for takeout.
No Tip on take out. order take out 10 min before getting there. FyI if you get anything fried and its in styro Open up styro to keep crunch.
I tip for table service. And if the food was good. It was good.
I would never tip on take out, only on delivery.

If my takeout experience is pleasant I might slide them a tip.
