We stayed at the Hyatt Place in Dublin. It was about 20 minutes from the zoo and is a decent area. There were plenty of nearby restaurants and the hotel was affordable with free breakfast.
Stay downtown it's about $75 cheaper and there is a Cota bus that takes you right to the zoo and if you show your ticket from the bus it's only $ 3 each to get in for up to 6 people
