At the Greater Chicago Food Depository, food safety is a top priority in everything we do, including sourcing, storage, handling and distribution. The Food Depository only accepts food from reputable sources known for consistent quality. We have various internal food safety policies and procedures to ensure the food we distribute to our partner agencies is safe to eat. There are often misperceptions about the dates typically found on packaged food with phrases such as “sell by,” “best by,” and “use by.” Those dates are largely based on the manufacturers’ recommendation for peak quality and have little to do with food safety. If you believe you’ve received expired food from a food pantry in our network, please call 773-247-3663 to let us know the relevant details.
