In regards to any of these BLM sites what is typically done to mark the campsite as claimed? Are people usually pretty respectful if you just leave something other than taking the time to set up my tent?

You leave the tag from your payment envelope at the campsite marker. It indicates the dates of your stay. I'd grab an envelope on your way in so you can fill it out once you find a site.
