I rode on Amtrak for the first time a couple days ago. The staff helped check my bags and showed us where to board the train. The gift shop has lots of cool train t-shirts.

Every station we went into on our trip with Amtrak everyone was wonderful.

The train station itself is wonderful. The area around it not so much. Third world level homelessness, many of whom are on drugs. Security seemed to do a good job of keeping them out. Felt safe inside.

Train Stations are a blast from the past. PDX station does not disappoint with the cool ambiance & Nostalgia it is just a lot of fun. They do a good job of keeping the transients away but they are so rampant in Portland that it is inevitably they get in and are a nuisance. Security is good though. And they remove them quickly. I took one star off because Amtrak is consistently behind schedule. We were delayed 3.5hours, it was crazy!!

Yes, roundabout right out front, can't miss it
Uber would definitely be safer and more convenient then public transport, as there are a lot of homeless around Downtown and especially near Union Station. Spend the extra few $$ and have peace of mind! And you don't have to lug around heavy luggage as well. Cheers.
Get there 30 minutes early, you don't need to check in when you get there but they usually board early.
