I never know what to make of the Y in various communities. In other counties, their subsidized discounts on swimming for low-income residents still cost more than a city swimming pass. For an inclusive agency, they are very exclusive. You'll find coffee, chairs, and sometimes donated items like shampoo or food (but the Y was not listed on community food bank lists). They never have enough DV advocates so if you are a social worker, consider volunteering. I'm sure they need volunteers for child care & errands too. Staff don't seem to waste resources, and they serve donated refreshments with grace. Some of the volunteers live in their own lily-white worlds, wanting to help but not aware of the hard edges of real-life situations. Some of the help is ineffective/not trained. Other help is excellent. Staff responds to some concerns very well. During DV groups, some staff in the past has said that one security process was not important because other security processes were in place. Then, why have the other security process at all? Each layer of security needs to be respected because when people start being arbitrary about security, then it lapses. You can't say, "We don't have to follow this rule carefully because others are looking out for us." Because the others might say the same thing! They could say, "Oops, we lapsed there for a few minutes. Well, that's okay, because the next layer of security will be in place." You know? Also, they could do a lot more to be safer, like not meeting on campus for one thing, but renting conference rooms from another building. In any case, they are not prepared for a serious crisis. It's nice having a covered awning out front. There is an elevator. The stairwell is wide & open as far as I can tell. Many staff members are vigilant; others, not as much. It is very clean.

After working at the Y for 12 years I feel qualified to add my two cents. The building houses some truely unsung community hero’s. The programs are varied, but consistently attempt to dove tail to provide maximum success for those who walk through the doors. I worked primarily with the y’s care program and the director has a vision for preschool that’s unmatched in the PNW. Staff are knowledgeable and professional in all areas. Wonderful place for children and parents alike.
