Everything about this place is perfect. Photos are from Blue Mountain Lookout just above the campground. Hard packed dirt mountain, some loose gravel, lots of switch backs and room to pull over to allow oncoming vehicle to go by. This is a 10 star experience.

So beautiful and peaceful. The long gravel road up keeps the traffic really low so you actually feel the quiet solitude. The road is in such good shape that even a small car could easily make it up. We hiked more than 8 miles and saw 8 other people (we saw more deer and grouse than people.)

Spectacular campground! At 5400ft, this is the highest car-camping location in Olympic National Park. It provides access to Blue Mountain, one of the easiest peaks to summit inside ONP borders. This makes it a popular spot for hikers and sight-seers, even though it lies some 45 minutes off the 101. The drive in is paved for a while, but when the true ascent begins, the road turns to dirt/gravel and narrows to one-car width at times, hugging the mountainside the whole way. That said, it's a gorgeous drive through rural countryside all the way from the highway. The campground is not large and can fill up quickly on the weekend. There is one indoor pit toilet for all to share, but it seems to stay reasonably clean. The campsites are nice and some have some really spectacular views. Just 5 minutes further uphill is a small parking lot just below the summit of Blue Mountain. From here you can see to Port Angeles, Canada, the San Juan Islands, and the Washington mainland. It's just a short walk up to the summit, where you get a full 360 view of the land, with the northeastern Olympic Mountains to the south. Must see at sunrise and sunset alike. Olympic Otter

One of the best drive-up campgrounds I've ever been to. Great views, and good hikes nearby. First-come, first served, with only 14 sites. No water, so be sure to bring plenty.

How is availability for campsites today August 2nd 2019? We are driving in from the Port Angeles ferry this afternoon and really hoping to get a site

Whitney Peterson | Aug 16, 2019

I arrived there in a Friday night at 6m and found a few spots. It was Saturday 10am where it got really packed. However that was a month ago.

will be driving in the dark this next friday because we'll probably get there by 10. Is it safe to drive at night?

MellowSteez47 | Aug 16, 2019

Yes. As long as you have decent headlights. It will also reduce your risk of head on collision around corners since you can see oncoming headlights. I've seen some bad head on crashes when people were driving way too fast up or down that road.

Is it free? And is it like campsites with already made bonfires or just open area

Cassandra Klien | Aug 16, 2019
Jeanne Panciera | Aug 16, 2019

It's not supposed to be free. Supposed to go to the WIC office in Port Angeles and pay. There is no self-pay station at the campground. Last year the ranger on site said it is basically first come first serve. Since it's above 3500 feet no open fires are allowed.

Do you accept tents

We were there yesterday, campsites were plentiful. Be sure your car can handle the long climb up and your brakes are good for the trip back down. Enjoy!

How is camping availability in August during weekdays? We're planning for this summer. Is the road passable in a full size van?

Carol Scheible | Aug 15, 2020
Steve Tate | Aug 15, 2020

I went in late September of last year. The road is passable in a full size van. Just be careful with the blind turns for oncoming traffic. Very few people were there in September. Make sure you have all of your food in containers. Rats found a way into my van and chewed on some food.

A lot of the reviews say to get there early, but how early? 10 AM? 11 AM? Earlier, later? Thinking of going end of July, and I know that's a packed time to go, so I want to plan for success.

The earler the better it feels up fast!

What is the pricing based off of (per person?) and how much is the fee roughly? I'm planning a road trip with my friends this winter and financing is a huge portion, so I'd like to know ahead of time how much we can be expecting to pay.

Carmen Vizin-Esquivel | Aug 16, 2019
Tim Hurd | Aug 16, 2019

Pretty sure it's only $15 per campsite. Not per person. But this campground is closed for most of winter due to snow.

Where should we pay for tent camping??

Likitha Pandupati | Aug 16, 2019
Jeanne Panciera | Aug 16, 2019

There is no good system for paying. There used to be a metal box in campground for drop payment but it was vandalized. I don't think park staff are expecting us to pay at the WIC in Port Angeles. That's what the ranger on site told me last fall at the campground.

Way too early. Keep an eye out on the NPS web site for specifics but I'm guessing June.
